Italy and Dominican Republic Strengthen Aerospace Cooperation on National Space Day

The Italian Embassy, along with local institutions, hosted the “Promoting Aerospace Development” conference on National Space Day, focusing on nano-satellite technology for environmental monitoring. Key speakers highlighted Italy’s space achievements and stressed the importance of cooperation in advancing aerospace capabilities in the Dominican Republic.

On National Space Day, the Italian Embassy in the Dominican Republic, alongside the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), Pedro Henríquez Ureña University, and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec), hosted a conference titled “Promoting Aerospace Development: Italian-Dominican Cooperation” at Intec. This initiative highlighted the importance of developing nano-satellites for monitoring environmental phenomena such as the arrival of sargassum, marine biodiversity, and risk prevention.

Attendees included students from Intec and Don Bosco School, who were educated on the significance of aerospace advancements. Marco Lisi, the special envoy for space from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to assisting the Dominican Republic in bolstering its capacity for aerospace data observation, collection, and analysis. He presented an overview of Italy’s space sector and the 60th anniversary of the San Marco I satellite launch on December 15, 1964.

Paolo Marzioli, a faculty member from Rome’s La Sapienza University, elaborated on how the growth in space technology can positively influence various scientific and technological domains, such as aeronautics, physics, software programming, mechatronics, and electronics. The Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy, Rodolfo Colaci, emphasized the necessity of cooperation and space diplomacy in a multifaceted international environment.

Teodoro Jiménez, the head of Geomantics at CNCCMDL, underscored the vital role of Italian assistance in the Dominican Republic, particularly in establishing the National Centre for Processing Climate Archives and Satellite and Drone Images. Edwin Sánchez Camilo of Intec provided insights into the phases and timelines associated with the Quisqueyasat-1 project, a collaborative effort with Italy, which aims to enhance monitoring of the sargassum issue and establish a foundation for more advanced future projects.

The conference celebrating National Space Day was organized to promote and enhance cooperation between Italy and the Dominican Republic in aerospace development. Emphasizing the significance of aerospace technology, the event conducted educational sessions for students on the utility of nano-satellites in environmental monitoring. It represents a proactive step towards developing national capacities in aerospace data collection and analysis, crucial for tackling environmental challenges and fostering scientific advancement in both countries.

In conclusion, the conference on aerospace development marked a significant milestone in the partnership between Italy and the Dominican Republic, showcasing the constructive dialogue on leveraging space technology for environmental monitoring and scientific progress. This collaboration is expected to not only enhance the Dominican Republic’s data collection and analysis capabilities but also strengthen international relations through space diplomacy and technological exchange.
