UN Commends Türkiye-Mediated Agreement to Resolve Somalia-Ethiopia Conflict
The UN has commended a Türkiye-mediated agreement to resolve conflicts between Somalia and Ethiopia, emphasizing political will and dialogue. The Ankara Declaration marks the beginning of a new phase in their relations, aiming at fostering peace and cooperation after recent tensions. UN officials express readiness to support the ongoing negotiations, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and friendship in overcoming differences.
The United Nations has praised the Türkiye-mediated agreement aimed at resolving the longstanding conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric characterized the pact as a significant stride towards fostering “friendship” and “mutual respect” between the two nations. He expressed anticipation for the initiation of technical negotiations that would hopefully yield a fruitful resolution. Furthermore, Dujarric underscored the importance of political will in overcoming the deep-seated differences that exist, emphasizing that dialogue is essential for progress.
The trilateral meeting in Ankara was marked by the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan alongside Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. During a joint press conference, President Erdogan announced the commencement of a new chapter defined by peace and cooperation in relations between Somalia and Ethiopia. This diplomatic engagement comes after a period of tension, escalating when Ethiopia entered into a maritime agreement with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to utilize the Berbera port. Türkiye has actively sought to mediate the conflicts and foster a constructive dialogue between the two countries.
Historically, Somalia and Ethiopia have experienced a complex relationship, characterized by territorial disputes and regional tensions. The situation deteriorated in January 2023 when Ethiopia negotiated a deal to access the strategic Berbera port in Somaliland, exacerbating tensions with Somalia. Recognizing the potential for conflict escalation, Türkiye stepped in to facilitate discussions aimed at reconciliation. The Ankara Declaration, which emerged from this diplomatic effort, signifies an important step toward stability in the Horn of Africa, underpinned by a commitment to peaceful negotiation and cooperation.
In summary, the recent Türkiye-mediated pact is a pivotal step towards resolving the differences between Somalia and Ethiopia. The UN’s endorsement of this initiative underscores the significance of international mediation in fostering peace and collaboration in conflict zones. As negotiations begin, the commitment of both nations, alongside support from Türkiye and the UN, will be critical in achieving lasting peace and addressing the underlying issues at stake in the region.
