Nigeria Appeals to South Africa for Support in G20 and BRICS Membership

Nigeria has requested South Africa’s support for full membership in the G20 and BRICS, highlighting a commitment to regional stability and collaboration. The appeal was made during the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission, where Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the importance of leadership roles under South Africa’s G20 presidency and stressed the urgency of peace efforts in Sudan. In response, South Africa’s Lamola affirmed cooperation and the necessity of bolstering bilateral ties.

Nigeria has officially sought the support of South Africa to bolster its aspirations for full membership in prominent international forums, including the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank. This appeal was made by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during the closing remarks at the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission session held in Cape Town. She also called for South Africa’s backing to facilitate Nigeria’s leadership in key thematic discussions under the South African G20 presidency.

South Africa, which assumed the presidency of the G20 on December 1, holds significant influence over global economic discussions, as it is also a member of the expanded BRICS alliance, which accounts for approximately 37 percent of the world’s GDP. Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and requested South Africa’s aid in progressing the peace initiative concerning Sudan, especially in light of ongoing conflicts.

In her remarks, Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is a member of the African Union’s ad hoc mediation committee, underscoring Nigeria’s focused efforts to resolve the Sudan crisis for the stability of the region. She concluded by expressing optimism that peace would lead to greater progress and development for all nations involved. Additionally, she commended the officials from both nations for their efforts in drafting a communiqué for the Bi-National Commission.

Responding to Nigeria’s requests, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Roland Lamola, affirmed his country’s commitment to representing Africa’s interests during its G20 presidency. He indicated that he would rely on Nigeria’s guidance in this significant role while stressing the need for a stronger bilateral relationship, citing common roots and shared goals between the two nations.

Lamola also identified key areas for collaboration, including trade, investment, healthcare, and education, and emphasized the urgency of finalizing existing agreements from their cooperative framework. Lastly, Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed Nigeria’s dedication to expanding cooperative endeavors with South Africa, specifically in infrastructure development and capacity building in the mining sector, proposing a draft Memorandum of Understanding focusing on the certification of Nigerian mining professionals.

The relationship between Nigeria and South Africa has evolved into a strategic partnership aimed at fostering regional stability and economic growth on the continent. As Nigeria seeks greater influence within global economic frameworks, its bid for membership in the G20 and BRICS reflects a broader strategy to engage actively in international affairs. The G20 is a platform for discussing and coordinating economic policy among the world’s largest economies, while BRICS represents a coalition of emerging economic powers. These memberships are crucial for Nigeria to enhance its voice on global platforms, especially as it works towards peace in conflict-ridden areas such as Sudan. This context provides insight into Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts and its reliance on South Africa’s leadership role within these significant international groups.

In summary, Nigeria’s appeal to South Africa for support in achieving full membership in the G20 and BRICS marks a significant step in its ambitions for a greater role in global economic discussions. The ongoing collaboration highlights Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and stability, particularly in the Sudan crisis. Both nations continue to recognize the importance of strengthening their bilateral relations across various sectors, signifying a promising partnership for future cooperation and mutual growth.
