They agreed to convene the Fourth Joint Ministerial Commission to deepen cooperation on transboundary resource utilization and regional security.
On November 28, 2024, in Addis Ababa, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, held discussions with the Ugandan State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. John Mulimba, focusing on mutual bilateral and regional interests. Ambassador Mesganu emphasized the significance of enhancing trade and investment relations through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Furthermore, he highlighted the urgency of collaboration in addressing transnational challenges, including violent extremism, environmental issues, and human trafficking.
Ambassador Mesganu also pointed out the necessity of partnering in the management of transboundary resources and ensuring regional peace and security, particularly concerning the ongoing conflicts in Sudan. In response, Hon. Mulimba expressed Uganda’s eagerness to strengthen its ties with Ethiopia and its attentiveness to developments in the Horn of Africa. He advocated for a pan-African approach for the equitable distribution of shared resources among nations. As a testament to their commitment to deepening relations, both ministers agreed to convene the Fourth Joint Ministerial Commission in Addis Ababa in the coming year.
The bilateral relations between Uganda and Ethiopia have historically been significant due to their geographical proximity and shared challenges. Both nations face common issues such as climate change, security threats, and utilization of transboundary resources. The discussions led by the foreign ministers reflect an ongoing commitment to enhance collaboration through diplomatic channels and regional frameworks, especially given the current geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa. Activities like the Joint Ministerial Commission are vital for formalizing cooperation and addressing multi-faceted challenges.
In summary, the dialogue between Ethiopia and Uganda signifies a strong commitment to deepening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional issues collaboratively. Both nations acknowledge the need for joint efforts in combating transnational challenges and leveraging shared resources for mutual benefit.
