Sudan Launches Humanitarian Airlift to South Kordofan Amid Crisis
Sudan has initiated an airlift of 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to South Kordofan, targeting both government-held Kadugli and the rebel-controlled Julud area. This operation follows discussions between Sudan’s leadership and South Sudan’s president, aiming to alleviate the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by famine in the region. The airlift illustrates Sudan’s commitment to international humanitarian law.
On November 3, 2024, Sudan commenced an airlift operation to deliver 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to regions within South Kordofan that are under the control of rebel forces. The operation, which involves flights from Juba, South Sudan, marks the beginning of an air bridge designated to transport vital food and medical supplies, with 78 flights planned. The first shipment of 16 tonnes reached the capital, Kadugli, while other assistance aims to aid the Julud area held by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which has declared a famine in its controlled territories earlier this year. The initiative follows a summit where Sudan’s ruling council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir to discuss humanitarian assistance to the area. This collaborative effort, facilitated by South Sudan’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, is intended to provide relief to citizens enduring severe deprivation. Sudan’s Foreign Ministry expressed that this airlift demonstrates the government’s commitment to adhere to international humanitarian laws while ensuring that citizens have access to essential resources amidst the ongoing conflict.
The ongoing conflict in South Kordofan has led to significant humanitarian crises, exacerbated by limited access to food and health services in rebel-held territories. The SPLM-N has claimed that famine conditions exist in areas they govern, necessitating urgent international and regional support. Historically, tensions between the Sudanese government and rebel groups continue to hamper relief efforts, making this airlift a crucial development in facilitating aid delivery. Collaborative discussions between Sudan and South Sudan’s leadership have occasionally provided pathways for humanitarian operations, though previous negotiations with rebel factions have struggled.
In summary, Sudan’s recent airlift for humanitarian aid represents a significant step towards addressing the dire conditions faced by those in South Kordofan. The commitment to aid delivery underlines the government’s acknowledgment of its responsibility to uphold humanitarian principles amidst ongoing conflict. Continuous dialogue with rebel factions remains essential for ensuring safe and effective aid corridors, as the situation in South Kordofan remains critical.
