Egypt Denies Involvement in Sudan Conflict Amid Rising Tensions
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected allegations of its involvement in Sudan’s conflict, asserting a neutral stance focused on civilian protection. RSF leader Hemedti claims Egyptian airstrikes targeted his forces, escalating tensions as the Sudanese army fights to reclaim territory. The ongoing war has caused widespread devastation, with grave humanitarian implications.
In a recent statement, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly refuted claims of its involvement in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, emphasizing its intention to remain neutral. The ministry articulated that Egypt’s primary objective is to bring an end to the hostilities and safeguard the civilian population. It stated, “These allegations come amid intensive Egyptian moves to stop the war, protect civilians, and strengthen the international response to humanitarian relief plans.” However, tensions have escalated following allegations from the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti. He asserted in a video that his forces were targeted by Egyptian air strikes in the Jabal Moya mountain region, which connects Sennar, Al-Jazirah, and White Nile states. Hemedti claimed that on October 5, Sukhoi 29 fighter jets belonging to Egypt bombarded RSF positions, which purportedly allowed the Sudanese army to regain control of the area. This accusation is part of a broader narrative; Hemedti has previously implicated Cairo in the Sudanese conflict, a situation that has been exacerbated by the ongoing war, which has persisted for nearly two years and has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and the displacement of over 10 million individuals. The Sudanese army, under the leadership of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has recently increased its military actions to reclaim territory from the RSF, and there is a pressing demand for disarmament from the rebel faction as a prerequisite for negotiations. Amid these complex dynamics, both factions in the conflict have faced accusations of committing severe human rights violations and atrocities, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and humanitarian intervention.
The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing for nearly two years, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with substantial loss of life and displacement. The clash primarily exists between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, leading to widespread accusations of atrocities against civilians by both sides. In this context, Egypt’s involvement has been a point of contention, with accusations from factions in Sudan regarding military support. Egypt has consistently stated its commitment to neutrality and humanitarian assistance, which underscores the complexity of the regional geopolitical landscape.
Egypt has denied allegations of its military involvement in Sudan’s conflict despite claims by RSF leadership that Egyptian forces conducted airstrikes. As the war continues, resulting in significant human suffering, Egypt asserts its focus remains on resolving the conflict and protecting civilians. The situation is critical, with calls for international intervention and a resolution to the protracted violence.
