Vietnam Deploys New Peacekeepers to South Sudan and Abyei
On Monday, Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence appointed three officers for roles in the UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei. On Monday, the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam organized a formal ceremony in Hà Nội to present the presidential and ministerial decisions appointing three officers for roles within the United Nations peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei. These officers include Lieutenant Colonel Vũ Thị Kim Oanh and Lieutenant Colonel Nguyễn Văn Thu, who have been designated as a quartermaster and a senior staff officer for training at the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), respectively. Additionally, Captain Chu Tuấn Linh will serve as a military observer at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This deployment is part of a rotation, as these individuals will take over from their predecessors in these critical positions. Major General Phạm Mạnh Thắng, the Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, highlighted that all officers have completed rigorous training and met the standards set by both the United Nations and the Vietnamese defense ministry. Notably, Lieutenant Colonel Oanh previously served as a military observer at UNMISS, while Lieutenant Colonel Thu held a logistics position at UNISFA. During the ceremony, Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Hoàng Xuân Chiến, who also leads the ministry’s steering committee for UN peacekeeping efforts, commended the officers for their exemplary service and emphasized the importance of their accumulated experiences for their upcoming missions. On behalf of her colleagues, Lieutenant Colonel Oanh expressed their commitment to fostering teamwork, collaborating effectively with fellow personnel, and diligently fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to them by the UN and the Vietnamese leadership. Furthermore, she pledged to promote the positive image of the Vietnamese people and the esteemed qualities of those who serve in the military.
